Downfall

Downfall is an endless arcade platformer starring a small, smiley-faced cube with one simple goal: keep falling!

The world moves relentlessly downwards, and you’ll need to move left, right, and jump between platforms to survive. Fall off the bottom of the screen and it’s game over. Get carried off the top and you’ll meet the same fate.

As you descend, new types of squares appear, each with different abilities that change how you navigate the level. The further you fall, the more challenging things become. How far can you make it?

Inspiration and development

Downfall takes inspiration from games like Doodle Jump, but turns the idea on its head. Instead of climbing endlessly upwards, you’re falling downwards, trying to stay on screen for as long as possible.

I built the game using BeepMicro, my lightweight JavaScript game engine. Its glowing vector graphics give the game a distinctive arcade style, while the simple geometric character and environments keep the focus on gameplay.

The result is a small game built around a simple idea: falling is easy, but surviving the fall is another matter.
